VEZINA TROPHY AWARD WINNERS: YEAR-BY-YEAR

VEZINA TROPHY AWARD WINNERS: YEAR-BY-YEAR

Awarded annually to the National Hockey League goaltender who is "adjudged to be the best at this position", the Vezina Trophy is voted upon by the league's thirty general managers at the conclusion of each regular season.

The trophy was introduced during the 1926-27 season to honor Georges Vezina, who died of tuberculosis in March of 1926. Initially, the criteria for winning the award was unclear, with various contemporary sources reporting that the winner was the goaltender with the lowest goals-against average, the "most valuable" goaltender, or the "most outstanding" goaltender. In February of 1946, the League officially gave its criteria for the award as the goaltender on the team allowing the fewest number of goals during the regular season. Following the 1964-65 regular season, the league began to allow teammates to share the Vezina Trophy so long as each played a minimum of twenty-five games.

Beginning with the 1981-82 regular season, the criteria for winning the Vezina Trophy was changed, and is now given to the most outstanding goaltender as voted by National Hockey League general managers. The old criteria was transferred to a new award, the William M. Jennings Trophy.
