BIOGRAPHY
- BORN: June 25, 1980.
- HOME:
- HEIGHT: 6'1".
- WEIGHT: 150 lbs.
- UNIFORM #: 35 (Wilkes-Barre 2002-03), 31 (Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre 2005-06, Norfolk), 41 (Wilkes-Barre 2003-04), 30 (Chicago), 34 (Portland), 29 (Anaheim).
- CATCHES: Left
- STYLE: Butterfly.
- STRENGTHS: Excellent reflexes, and is known for making the big save when he has to.
- WEAKNESSES: Very slight for his 6-foot-1 frame and could put on some more weight.
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Excellent reflex stopper is penciled in as No. 1 man in the minors next
season." (The Hockey News Future Watch 2000)
"Caron's stock rose considerably this past season. Led the Q-League in wins
and was named the Memorial Cup's Top Goaltender as he backstopped Rimouski
to a CHL title. A workhorse goalie who needs to bulk up. Has given the
organization some hope for the future." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01,
p. 109)
"Wiry thin at 6-foot-1 and 160 pounds, Caron thrives in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
when he was sharing duty with Rich Parent. When
Parent was called up and Caron was forced to carry the load, he struggled.
Caron needs to work on his upper body strength and puck-handling. He's
tentative at times. When he loses confidence, he hangs back instead of
challenging shooters. Given the Penguins' uncertain goaltending situation,
Caron may get a chance to prove himself sooner than anyone things, although
next season is probably unrealistic." (Joe Starkey, The Hockey News
Future Watch 2001)
"After an awesome showing at the 2000 Memorial Cup, Caron graduated to the
pro ranks last year. He posted solid numbers but struggled when given the lead
role. However, the future is still bright for the young keeper. Should spend
the next couple of years as the top stopper in the minors and the third-string
keeper for the Penguins. The butterfly goalie could eventually make an
excellent backup." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 111)
"Caron has rebounded nicely from a disastrous start with Wilkes-Barre. He won
just three of his first 20 decisions, but bounced back with a five-game
unbeaten streak. Caron is a classic butterfly goalie who has a tendency to
overplay his hand and give shooters the upper part of the net. He does have
tremendous reflexes, however." (Derrick Goold, The Hockey News Future Watch
2002)
"Caron posted a respectable .903 save percentage but could only win 14
of 46 games as he toiled with the disappointing Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Penguins. Caron plays the butterfly style and made progress last season
as he moved fron the backup role to the starter role."
(The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 109)
"This quick, athletic goalie surprised everybody when he joined the Penguins
and delivered two shutouts in his first five starts. Caron was average during
his AHL season in Wilkes-Barre, with a .904 save percentage. A classic
butterfly goalie, he is extremely quick from post to post. He has a good
glove hand and a winner's attitude. He is not a good puckhandler and sometimes
goes down too quickly, leaving the upper part of the net available." (Joe
Starkey, The Hockey News Future Watch 2003, p. 32)
"Training camp could be Caron's final shot to prove he belongs. Moreover, the arrival
of Jocelyn Thibault, along with the continued presence
of prospects Marc-Andre Fleury and
Andy Chiodo, will seriously diminish his chances of ever
playing a key role in Pittsburgh. He needs a change of scenery." (The Sports
Forecaster 2005-06, p. 99)

FIRSTS:
- Sebastien made his National Hockey League debut on January 11, 2003, at
Mellon Arena as his Pittsburgh Penguins squared off against the visiting
New York Rangers. Starter Jean-Sebastien Aubin had
to be pulled after giving up three goals in the first period; Caron entered,
stopped all eighteen shots he faced, and gave the club hope. Ultimately,
the Penguins would fall by a 3-1 count. "Caron was excited when we called him
up and he was wondering if he would get in and play in a game," Penguins coach
Rick Kehoe said. "It just so happened we got him in earlier than we thought we
were going to do."
- Two nights later, when his Penguins travelled to FleetCenter to face the
Boston Bruins, Sebastien started his first National Hockey League game (and
picked up his first National Hockey League win!) Caron stopped thirty-one
shots, including all twenty-four over the final two periods, to earn a 2-1 win
over the Bruins and Steve Shields. "I'm really
happy," Caron said. "The guys played well in front of me and I just had to
make a couple of saves. We scored two goals, and that's better than one."
Caron was at his best in the second period, when the Penguins were outshot,
15-5. Just over five minutes in, he stopped a blast by defenseman Bryan Berard
and denied Sean Brown on the rebound. "He did a lot of good things in there,"
Penguins coach Rick Kehoe said. "He made some big saves for us and kept us in
there, especially in the second period."
- Continuing his fast-track start, Sebastien recorded his first shutout of
his National Hockey League career at RBC Center, where his Penguins battled
the hometeam Carolina Hurricanes. Caron stopped 26 shots in his second NHL
start and Martin Straka gave him all the support he needed with a first-period
goal as the Penguins blanked the reeling Hurricanes, 2-0. A 1999 third-round
draft pick, the 22-year-old Quebec native was even better in this one than in
his first start, particularly in the final minute after the Hurricanes
pressured him with an extra skater. A shot by defenseman Sean Hill deflected
off Caron's chest and another shot by Rob Brind'Amour bounced off the crossbar
with ten seconds left. Caron also used his blocker to stop defenseman Niclas
Wallin from point-blank range before the Penguins finally were able to clear
the zone. "We were lucky tonight," Caron said. "The puck went off the post and
off my chest. I didn't see it. The team was there to help me a lot. It is never
done until the buzzer sounds. I am really happy. It is like a dream right now.
I have to come down and start focusing on the next game we play."
PENALTY SHOTS:
- Allowed penalty shot goal (Marian Gaborik), November 19, 2003.
- Stopped penalty shot (Erik Cole), November 29, 2003.
- Stopped penalty shot (Sean Bergenheim), March 31, 2006.
NHL SHOOTOUTS:
- October 7, 2005 - lost to Carolina, 0-1 (Cory Stillman goal, Matt Cullen save).
- January 26, 2006 - lost to NY Islanders, 0-1 (Miroslav Satan goal, Trent Hunter save).
- April 15, 2006 - lost to NY Islanders, 3-4 (Miroslav Satan save, Trent Hunter save, Shawn Bates goal, Jason Blake goal, Alexei Yashin goal, Robert Nilsson goal).
- 2005-06 season to date: 0 wins, 3 losses, 4 saves on 10 chances.
