WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"The Rangers surprised many at the draft when they picked a goalie in the first round. "I think our whole staff really liked him," [Rangers' director of player development Larry] Pleau said. "He's a legitimate NHL goalie of the future five years down the line. He has got good size and he's going to grow and he's a real competitive kid." Cloutier is a combative, fiery goalie who reminds some people of a young Ron Hextall." (Rick Carpiniello, The Hockey News Future Watch 1995)

"Highly touted goaltending prospect Dan Cloutier isn't quite there yet." (ESPN Hockey 96, p. 66)

"He was sent to Binghampton last year for seasoning. Could be a good one when Richter hangs up the pads, which he won't do for several years." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey 1997-98, p. 130)

"Goaltending is one area where Tampa has problems. They've had a ton of injuries and inconsistency, but they pray Cloutier is the answer. Cloutier struggled with a nagging groin injury last season. Extremely competitive goaltender who will do anything to win. He has a history of winning at the junior level (1993 Memorial Cup, 1995 WJC gold medal). He's the future of the Lightning between the pipes." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 141)

"Counted upon as an emerging star and No. 1 netminder via the Rangers, Cloutier's first year in Tampa as the go-to guy was good at first but miserable shortly thereafter. So miserable that the Lightning dealt for another "goalie of the future" when they acquired Kevin Weekes from the Islanders during the past summer. While the Lightning's defensive shortcomings didn't help his cause, Cloutier's .885 save percentage made matters even worse. A spirited and fiery competitor, his humbling 1999-2000 season may help in the long run. Too early in his career to count him down and out, but he'll now have to work his way back up as the No. 1 man, a job Weekes also has his eyes set on. A warrior, Cloutier is destined to a nice future nonetheless." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 130)

"At one time considered one of the NHL's brightest young goaltenders, Cloutier's career has stalled. Both the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning gave up on him, so Vancouver may be his last opportunity to seize a No. 1 job. However, his shaky play during the 2000-01 playoffs has put the 25-year-old's status in doubt. Competitive and fiery, Cloutier must work on his concentration, especially in high traffic. With Bob Essensa out of the picture for 2001-02, the Canucks have given Cloutier a vote of confidence. He must now step up his play and grab the No. 1 job, since he can no longer blame his failures on playing for a bad team." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 193)

"In his fifth NHL season, and first full year with Vancouver, Cloutier finally emerged as a bona fide No. 1 goaltender. He posted a new franchise mark with seven shutouts and set net career standards in all statistical categories. Unfortunately, his muff of a Nicklas Lidstrom slapshot from center ice may have completed altered the 2001-02 postseason landscape. While the talented netminder has the physical tools to be among the best at his position, he continues to be plagued by mental lapses. Cloutier's playoff meltdown against Detroit didn't change Canucks GM Brian Burke's opinion on his state of goaltending. As such, Cloutier gets another shot at redemption." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 187)

"G.M. Brian Burke stood by Cloutier after the season, but how much leeway does a goalie have after a couple of disappointing playoff showings? He can't afford a long regular-season slump." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 2003-04, p. 9)

"The most maligned player in Vancouver returns as the starter between the pipes, though Cloutier's biggest supporter - former GM Brian Burke - is now in Anaheim. Therefore, the 2005-06 campaign will be a pressure-cooker for Cloutier, who has nevertheless posted excellent totals in the regular season." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 99)
