WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Last year's No. 1-ranked prospect in Future Watch has had some growing pains in his first year of pro hockey. As of early March, Denis had a 9-20-1 record with the Hershey Bears, sporting a 3.32 goals-against average and .884 save percentage. Those numbers have the Avs brass somewhat alarmed, but nobody is ready to give up on the former world junior champ. "He's had to make an adjustment to the pro level," said Avs' assistant coach Jacques Cloutier. "It's a big step and he needs to keep improving, but he's going to be a very good goalie in the NHL." Denis has played better in the second half of the season, lowering his GAA by more than half a goal. If he is to convince the Avs he is the heir apparent to Patrick Roy, though, Denis will have to have a better season in 1998-99." (Adrian Dater, The Hockey News Future Watch 1998)

"After a rough start to his first minor pro season last year, Denis has the Avs excited again. He has become one of the American League's better goalies this season and looked excellent in a brief recall to Colorado. "This kid is going to be a regular goalie, and a very good one, for years to come in the NHL," said Avs' coach Bob Hartley. "He just has so much confidence and maturity for a kid his age." Don't be surprised if Denis emerges as Patrick Roy's backup next season." (Adrian Dater, The Hockey News Future Watch 1999)

"Has been compared to Patrick Roy numerous times. They play the same style - butterfly goalies with strong positioning. Denis is a very confident goalie who plays a safe game. Although he has struggled at different times in the AHL, Denis was better in his sophomore pro season than in his rookie one. Without a doubt, he will be a No. 1 goalie in the NHL." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 180)

"Great opportunity for the promising youngster to step out of Patrick Roy's shadow." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 46)

"Denis is the cornerstone of the new franchise. After appearing in 27 games with the Avalanche the past two seasons, he is ready for the challenges that await him in Columbus. Technically sound, he has the ability to become one of the game's best goalkeepers. However, he'll need to be even stronger mentally as his goals-against average will rise with the expansion team. Denis will likely get the call in 40 games for the Blue Jackets this season." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 146)

"Once the goaltender of the future in Colorado, Denis now carries the same moniker in Columbus. He struggled at times last season but is still only 24 years old. Furthermore, he has now seen NHL action the past four seasons. The 6-foot 190-pounder is a classic butterfly goalkeeper in the Patrick Roy mold. He has tremendous flexibility and a knack for stopping the puck on a regular basis. Now that he is a year removed from the Avalanche, Denis should begin to feel more at home with the Blue Jackets. Denis will begin to push veteran Ron Tugnutt for playing time this season and could emerge as the No. 1 man as early as the end of the coming season. If not, the former junior star will still play a big role in what appears to be one of the best goaltending tandems in the NHL." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 152)

"In his second season with the Blue Jackets, Denis continued to push former veteran teammate Ron Tugnutt for playing time. While they split the workload almost down the middle last year, Denis briefly took over the No. 1 role in mid-season and showed glimpses of future stardom. There's no question about the youngster's physical attributes, and his mental approach to the game is also coming around. He has a can't-miss tag that won't easily be shed. Denis will see his playing time increase since Columbus has now handed him the starting role. However, his numbers won't improve until the team starts making strides." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 146)

"In his last two seasons with Columbus, Denis has averaged 72 appearances between the pipes. That's likely to change now that the club has acquired Martin Prusek to serve as his caddy. Denis also should benefit from a far improved blueline corps in Columbus. In fact, Denis may enjoy a career season." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 100)
