WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Asking a 19-year-old to backstop a confused organization is off the wall."
(The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 47)
"Quick, agile and very confident about his abilities, DiPietro loves to
play under pressure. An excellent puckhandler, he's the only goaltender
to go first overall in the draft [sic]. Named the Most Outstanding Goaltender
and a member of the All-Tournament Team at the world junior championships. Was
so good with Boston University last season that the Island traded away super
prospect Roberto Luongo, another can't-miss goalie."
(The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 94)
"By the end of his first pro season, DiPietro became ensconced as the
Islanders' No. 1 goaltender. While he began the season slowly in the
minors, the 5-11 180-pounder gained more confidence as he went along.
DiPietro has unbelievable puckhandling skills for a goalkeeper. Now, he
must learn to communicate better with his defensemen and judge when and
when not to leave the crease. Between the pipes, the former Boston
University netminder has a flare for the dramatic and an outstanding glove
hand. The Islanders must be careful in their handling of DiPietro in
his first full season as the Isles' starting goaltender. He won't likely
make more than 50 starts this season and could go through some growing
pains as the starter." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 96)
"The first modern-day goaltender ever chosen with the first overall pick in the
NHL entry draft admitted "it was tough to cope mentally" when he was sent to
the minors after the Islanders grabbed veteran Chris
Osgood from Detroit in the waiver draft just days before the season
started. But DiPietro rebounded from a slow start to make the American League
All-Star Game. With Osgood signed through next season, Milbury will even
consider dealing the 20-year-old stickhandling whiz to aid the Isles' playoff
push, but only if he can acquire a bona fide star in return." (Peter
Botte, The Hockey News Future Watch 2002)
"The Islanders can now be patient with DiPietro's development after acquiring
a legitimate No. 1 goaltender in Chris Osgood.
DiPietro had al all-star year in the minors with Bridgeport and finished with
a 2.32 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage. He was excellent in
the playoffs and led the Sound Tigers to the Calder Cup finals with a 2.13
goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. DiPietro has all the tools
to be a star goaltender in he NHL and is the best puckhandling goaltender to
come along since Martin Brodeur." (The Sports
Forecaster 2002-03, p. 94)
"The brash 21-year-old netminder strongly believes he's ready for the NHL, and
the Isles are having a hard time disagreeing with him. Chris Osgood's January ankle injury necessitated
DiPietro's recall from Bridgeport, where he quietly posted tremendous numbers.
In three NHL starts before the all-star break, DiPietro posted two wins, a 2.01
goals-against average and .921 save percentage. Opponents noticeably have
limited amount of dump-ins against him because of his lauded puck-handling
ability." (Peter Botte, The Hockey News Future Watch 2003, p. 30)
"At 24, DiPietro could be on the verge of a breakthrough season. While he didn't
play for any club teams overseas during the lockout, DiPietro was stellar between
the pipes for the United States at the 2005 IIHF World hockey championships.
Puck-handling is his big weapon, though it may be diminished by new NHL rules."
(The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 100)

VEZINA TROPHY BALLOTING:
ALL-STAR TEAM BALLOTING:
INJURIES:
- Groin injury; did not appear in any preseason games, September 2000. Because Rick missed the entire preseason, he was derailed in his bid to jump directly from Boston University to the National Hockey League. "It's kind of tough to swallow personally, but it's perfectly understandable from the team's standpoint. I'm a young guy. Hopefully I'll get back here sooner rather than later."
- Left game with mild concussion, October 13, 2005.
- Left game with undisclosed knee injury, December 30, 2005. During a scramble that led to a Daniel Alfredsson goal, Ottawa forward Bryan Smolinski fell on DiPietro, who remained on the ice as Islanders trainer Rich Campbell tended to him. DiPietro needed help from his teammates to get to his feet and skate off.
- Missed game with hip flexor injury, October 14, 2006.
- Left game with head injury late in first period, March 13, 2007. Chasing down a loose puck at the Islanders blue line to prevent a breakaway, DiPietro's head was hit by the leg of Montreal forward Steve Begin.
- Left game with eye injury late in second period, November 3, 2007. Struck in the mask by Sidney Crosby's stick, DiPietro had already left for the dressing room but was called back down the tunnel to show the refere that he had been cut near the eye (Crosby received a double minor for high-sticking). Team spokesman Chris Botta said initial reports showed the injury was not serious.
- Suffered knee injury in pregame warmup, December 26, 2007. DiPietro played the first period before leaving the game in favour of Wade Dubielewicz.
- Had surgery on knee, sidelined indefinitely, September 5, 2009.

FIRSTS:
- Made National Hockey League debut in a 2-1 Islander loss to Buffalo, stopping 29 of 31 shots and recording an assist before leaving at 15:55 of the third period with cramps, January 27, 2001.
- Recorded first National Hockey League win, making 24 of 26 saves in a 4-2 Islanders victory in Edmonton, February 16, 2001.
- Rick recorded his first National Hockey League shutout on October 11, 2003, in a 6-0 Islander victory in Buffalo against the Sabres. He only had to stop thirteen Buffalo shots. "Most of the time I was watching," DiPietro admitted. "But (the Sabres) were dumping the puck in a lot, so that kept me in the game.Every time the puck came in our zone, our 'D' was shutting the door and the forwards were chipping the puck out." "The good news is, for a young guy like that he's at his best when he's busiest," [Long Island coach Scott] Stirling said. "For him to concentrate through that was a good sign."
- Rick made his first National Hockey League postseason start on April 8, 2004, when his Islanders battled the Tampa Bay Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. He fought
hard, but was victimized by turnovers in front of him that set up Tampa Bay's first two goals in a 3-0 defeat.
- Rick earned his first National Hockey League postseason victory, and first shutout, on April 10, 2004, in a 3-0 Islanders win at the St. Pete Times Forum over
the top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning. "I think everyone's nervous," DiPietro said. "If you don't have jitters, then you better check your pulse because
this is a big time of year. Big circumstances." DiPietro stopped all twenty-two shots he faced in the shutout win. Tampa Bay came closest to scoring
with just under fourteen minutes to play, when Vincent Lecavalier was ruled to have kicked a puck into the net.
DID YOU KNOW?
- Rick holds the NCAA record for most saves in a single game, as the Boston University netminder stopped 77 of 80 St. Lawrence shots in a 2-3 quadruple-overtime (123:53) loss, on March 26, 2000. Robin Carruthers finally beat DiPietro in what would prove to be DiPietro's final collegiate game. Earning the win for St. Lawrence was Derek Gustafson.
- On September 12, 2006, Rick and the New York Islanders agreed upon a fifteen-year, $67.5 million
contract. This marked the longest contract in the history of the National Hockey League.
- On March 5, 2007, Rick set a New York Islander team record with fifty-six saves against the crosstown
New York Rangers, allowing only a third-period goal to Petr Prucha. Unfortunately for DiPietro, the Islanders
lost in the shootout. "It's my job to make as many saves as I can. I was able to do that for the most part.
It's always tough to lose," said DiPietro.
- In the spring of 2008, Rick served as a studio analyst for the Versus television network's broadcast of the conference quarterfinals.
