Brian made his National Hockey League debut at the Bell Centre in Montreal on November 8, 2005. With regular Tampa Bay backup Sean Burke sidelined, Eklund was given the start for the Lightning, and stopped the first seven shots he faced before Andrei Markov beat him on a shot from the left point at 10:53 of the first period. The Lightning held a 2-1 advantage after two periods, but third-period markers from Craig Rivet and Richard Zednik spoiled Eklund's inaugural start. Eklund finished with sixteen saves on the night.
