Emile's son, Bobby, enjoyed a mostly minor-league career, before embarking on a coaching career in 1987.
After his playing career, Emile served as coach, general manager, and president for various National Hockey League teams, including the New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers.
In 2001, the American Hockey League introduced the Emile Francis Trophy, to be given to the regular-season champions of the AHL North Division.
