Michael made his National Hockey League debut on October 12, 2005, at Philips Arena as the Atlanta Thrashers faced the visiting Montreal Canadiens. Mike Dunham started the game for the Thrashers, but was forced to leave with a groin injury nearly seven minutes into the game. Garnett stopped 23 shots through two periods to keep Montreal from extending their 1-0 lead, and overall stopped 29 of 30 shots in a 2-0 loss, allowing just a goal to Canadiens captain Saku Koivu. "I felt good out there, but unfortunately we could not get any goals," Garnett said.
Michael earned his first National Hockey League victory on November 18, 2005, at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, but it took some extra effort on his part. Trailing 5-3 late in the third period, Garnett stopped the Flyers' R. J. Umberger on a penalty shot. Atlanta then scored with 110 seconds remaining, and 7 seconds remaining, to tie the game, before defenseman Greg de Vries found the back of the net in overtime for a 6-5 win. Garnett stopped 31 shots in the victory.
