DID YOU KNOW?
- On February 21, 1970, Eddie was the goaltender who allowed Bobby Hull's 500th career National Hockey League goal.
- Eddie started wearing a mask in the 1970-71 season. Oddly enough, he was a vocal critic of the mask less than one
season earlier. "Didn't Claude Dufour (a goalie with Hershey in the American League) lose an eye after the puck hit the
fibre on his mask and then glanced off it and hit his eye? What happens is that the goalies generally find that the eye
slits in the masks are too small to give them adequate vision around the net. So they cut a little bit, and then maybe a
little bit more, and by that time there isn't very much protection for the goaltender's eyes. A mask would hurt my style
because I like to shoot the puck a lot. If I was wearing a mask, it would take a second or two longer for me to find the
puck. That could be fatal." (The Sporting News, January 10, 1970)
- In 1978, Giacomin was promised the Rangers' coaching job by team president Bill Jennings, only to be overridden
by Sonny Werblin - boss of Madison Square Garden - who picked Fred Shero instead. (The Toronto Star, November 7, 1984)
- Eddie served as the Rangers' goaltending coach from 1986 to 1989.
