"Gilbert, who has had his ups and downs to be sure, found himself in a commanding position when he became a free agent last summer but held the Bruins in the palm of his hand while he listened to offers from other clubs. Gilbert, who did not get along with [Don] Cherry, expressed a willingness to sign with Boston once the coach departed for Colorado and was replaced by Fred Creighton. But he was known to have spoken with the Montreal Canadiens (who suffered a serious blow when Ken Dryden retired) and the Quebec Nordiques, among others." On February 11, 1971, Gilles was the goaltender who allowed Jean Beliveau's 500th career National Hockey League goal.
During his playing career with the North Stars, Gilles was a shortstop on a semi-pro baseball team.
Gilles was part-owner of a nightclub in Quebec City (Minnesota North Stars 72-73 Media Guide)
When Gilles was a member of the Boston Bruins, he didn't see eye to eye with coach Don Cherry. According to Cherry, "And I used to give it to Gilbert pretty good, too. When we had shooting practice, I'd send all the goofy guys, the ones who fired high shots, up to Gilbert's end of the rink. The same guys, the ones who kept the shots low, went to Cheevers' end of the rink." (Toronto Star, December 30, 1984)
