WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Uses the butterfly with great effectiveness...blocks shots excellently with body and leg pads...recovers and controls quickly...has outstanding concentration...follows the puck well through traffic...moves with agility...catches the puck whenever possible...positions himself well for the second shot...likes to challenge the shooters...stands his ground in close shooting situations...handles the puck skillfully." (The National Hockey League 1987-88 Sourcebook, p. 86)

"With Smith back, rookie Jeff Hackett, the Isles' second draft pick in 1987, gets a year or two to develop fully in the minors." (The Hockey News 1988-89 Yearbook, p. 62)

"He's the man now in goal. Hackett is coming off two very good regular seasons, but it's a different kind of pressure starting the year off as No. 1" (The Hockey News 1997-98 Yearbook, p. 95)

"Hackett had some sparkling numbers last year (2.16 goals-against average, 92.7 save percentage) and [coach Craig] Hartsburg is confident Hackett can handle the pressure of being a No. 1 goalie despite a not-so-hot playoff performance against the Colorado Avalanche. Nevertheless, the pressure is on Hackett to get it done as a No. 1 goaltender over the course of a full season and show he is a playoff performer or this could be a one-year tryout." (The Hockey News 1997-98 Yearbook, p. 95)

"Jeff Hackett is coming off a career year. We find it hard to believe that he can post those kinds of numbers again, particularly the awesome .927 save percentage." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 50)

"Hackett's star is on the rise with the surprising breakthrough year he had last season, pushing Eddie Belfour out of Chicago." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 153)

"Became Montreal's No. 1 goaltender when he was acquired from Chicago in exchange for Jocelyn Thibault. Finished four games over .500 with the Habs. Played more minutes last year than any other season in his career, including junior and the AHL. One of the league's most underrated goalies in Chicago, it's impossible not to go unnoticed in hockey-mad Montreal. He's a reflex goaltender who has an incredible work ethic. Signed a three-year deal in June and will be Montreal's top netminder and provide tutorship for Theodore." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 84)

"For now, Hackett remains the Canadiens' No. 1 goaltender, although young Jose Theodore is pushing him hard. The veteran enjoyed his second consecutive solid season with the Habs and has earned the faith of his coach, his teammates, the fickle Montreal fans and the local media. However, Hackett's age and salary could work against him this season. In September, the focus during camp will be on the goaltenders, with Hackett desperately trying to hold off emerging star Theodore." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 73)

"For now, Hackett remains Montreal Canadiens property. However, his status on the team has changed dramatically in one year's time. After a slow start last season, the veteran netminder lost the remaining 54 games due to a broken hand. While the 13-year pro has won over both fans and media alike in Montreal, it's only a matter of time before Jose Theodore and Mathieu Garon push him out of town. The first thing on Hackett's agenda this training camp will be to show that his hand is fully healed. If he displays his 1999-00 form in the preseason, his trade value will skyrocket." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 75)

"Were it not for Hackett's misfortune, Jose Theodore's stardom may still be in question. The veteran netminder missed the majority of the season due to injury for the second year in a row, which has rendered him a forgotten man in the Habs' scheme of things. When healthy, Hackett has the presence and veteran savvy to win a lot of games. Furthermore, he's capable of stealing wins with quick reflexes and agility. Hackett needs ice time in order to get back to 1999-00 form. However, he won't get it anytime soon with the Canadiens, so a trade at some point this season is inevitable." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 73)
