WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"At the start of training camp, there was some belief the 1996-97 MVP in the Finnish Elite League may challenge Rhodes and Tugnutt. While Hurme had a couple of brilliant performances, reality set in when he was sent to the Detroit Vipers to gain experience. After a battle over playing time in Detroit, Hurme was sent to the Indianapolis Ice where he has done a decent job." (Chris Stevenson, The Hockey News Future Watch 1998)

"This is a make-or-break year for Hurme. At times, he looks like he's headed for stardom. Then, there are the nights Hurme looks like [he] should head back to Finland. "Right now, I'm of the opinion that he will be able to play in this league," [Ottawa general manager Rick] Dudley said. "I know (coach) Jacques Martin likes him and so does Phil (Myre). What concerns me is the amount of inconsistency. He has to get the job done night in and night out." Hurme's contract is up at the end of the season and the Senators will re-evaluate where he fits into their plans." (Bruce Garrioch, The Hockey News Future Watch 1999)

"The former Finnish Elite league MVP goalie could give Chouinard some competition for the Senators' future No. 1 job. Hurme almost cracked the Sens' lineup after a solid training camp in 1998-99, but was finally ousted by the experienced combo comprised of Tugnutt and Rhodes. Already in his mid-twenties, Hurme plays a mature game, but is still very inconsistent." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 89)

"Next season will be make or break for Hurme. He figures to be given a legitimate shot at the No. 1 job if Tom Barrasso opts to leave as an unrestricted free agent during the summer. The Finnish prospect has been superb in Grand Rapids this season while working with backup Mike Fountain. Still, the Senators may have to convince Hurme to remain in North America this summer. There has been a lot of speculation he could return home." (Bruce Garrioch, The Hockey News Future Watch 2000)

"Finnish goalkeeper has nothing left to prove in the minors. Needs a chance to strut his stuff." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 46)

"The Senators are extremely high on this Finnish athlete many think is Ottawa's netminder of the future. The three-year pro has been a splendid IHLer and now deserves a shot at winning a full-time job in Ottawa. A solid season in Grand Rapids has raised his stock considerably. Named to the IHL's second all-star team, Hurme was solid in the postseason as well. Seems like Hurme only needs a solid camp to start receiving a regular NHL paycheck." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 78)

"The 26-year-old Finn was solid and came as advertised in his first full NHL season. Very athletic and quick, he instilled confidence in his teammates by stepping in when Patrick Lalime wend down due to injury [and] playing very well. He's competitive, but displays a cool demeanor and doesn't get rattled after a bad goal. Hurme will be a No. 1 goalie some day, but it will do him well to watch and learn more as a backup. Expect 20-25 starts." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 80)

"The calm and collected Finn has progressed smoothly in his first two seasons in Ottawa. Hurme's play was so solid early last season that he temporarily took over the No. 1 job from a struggling Patrick Lalime. The quick netminder only raised his value with a stellar performance at the Winter Olympics. Hurme's primary weakness is his puckhandling skills, which he must improve at the NHL level. Now entering his third season, Hurme could continue to push for playing time should Lalime struggle once again. Otherwise, the 27-year-old might force a trade down the road in order to become a true starting goalkeeper." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 78)

"Backup Jani Hurme got relatively little work last season as a starter and can expect the same treatment as long as [Florida coach Mike] Keenan is coach." (Sporting News Hockey 2003-04, p. 41)

"The presence of fellow Finn Kari Lehtonen and vet Mike Dunham in Atlanta may mean yet another change of address for the likable Hurme, who has missed tow seasons due to serious back problems. A good reflex goaltender, Hurme possesses the mental fortitude to be a quality backup. His wonky back remains an issue, though." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 101)
