DID YOU KNOW?
During the Winnipeg Victorias' 1896 Stanley Cup challenge on February 14 (against the Montreal Victorias), Whitey played with white cricket pads on his legs. Although other goaltenders at the time were wearing shin protection, Merritt is acknowledged as the first goaltender to wear something similar (albeit more primitive) to today's goaltending leg equipment. Merritt proceeded to register a 2-0 shutout victory over Montreal.
