WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"He plays a very aggressive style of goaltending. He loves to challenge the shooters and for that reason covers his angles well. He's very quick and has great reaction. The only flaw in his game is consistency. Has the ability to make the show-stopping save as well as to let in weak goals from time to time." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 216)

"Has had to make adjustments in his game in first pro year. Has adapted well to North American style." (Dan Wood, The Hockey News Future Watch 2000-01)

"Quick as a cat, Nabokov plays an aggressive style. Loves to come out to challenge shooters. Unfortunately, he has been inconsistent. He piles on the highlight-reel saves only to allow weak goals from time to time. At this stage in his career, and for some time still, Nabokov is considered a backup goalie." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 213)

"The Kazak goalkeeper enjoyed a dream season in 2000-01. Nabokov took full advantage of Steve Shields' injury and stole his job away, leading the Sharks to their best regular season ever. And most notably, he capped it off with the 2001 Calder Trophy. Not bad for a guy who was supposed to be an understudy for a year or two. Nabokov is technically very sound and loves to challenge shooters. You'll often find him making highlight-reel saves. Sharks management knew he would be good, but not this quickly. The challenge for the 26-year-old netminder is to avoid a letdown. The club feels they're set between the pipes with Nabokov for a long time. Can he possibly be any better than last year?" (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 219)

"As the undisputed starting goaltender on a team still looking to get over the Western Conference hump, Nabokov has been criticized the past two seasons. However, he did win his first playoff series in 2001-02, and had a memorable second-round duel with Colorado's Patrick Roy. The 2001 Calder Trophy winner has stabilized the Sharks' goaltending situation and is still improving his overall game. The 27-year-old is somewhat of a throwback, playing a stand-up style and combining great positioning with above-average reflexes and recuperative powers. Nabokov will continue to be front and center in San Jose. He is on the verge of becoming a Vezina Trophy winner." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 213)

"These days, Nabokov is considered one of the NHL's best. His unshakeable concentration and high-end consistency levels make him a dominant performer. He uses the combination of challenging shooters and relying on his quick refleces to stone shooters. At times, leaves himself out of position for rebounds, though." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 103)
