WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Relies mostly on a butterfly-style game but is also a very stable stand-up goaltender. Very strong and solid on his skates. He has very good quickness and reaction time, and possesses an excellent glove hand. He also uses his stick well around the net to deflect passes away. Has excellent concentration and likes to challenge the shooters." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 115)

"Ouellet drew a lot of attention at the World Junior Championship, where his 1.83 goals-against average was the lowest by a Canadian goalie since Jose Theodore's 1.50 in 1996. The Flyers are so high on him, they declared him off-limits in their ill-fated bid for defenseman Ray Bourque. "The word from Sweden (WJC) was that he was outstanding," said Flyers' assistant GM Paul Holmgren. "He's a butterfly goalie, but he's big enough (6-feet, 185 pounds) that if he goes down, he still covers a fair portion of the net."" (Wayne Fish, The Hockey News Future Watch 2000)

"Ouellet is part of the Flyers' tremendous collection of spectacular goaltending prospects. Fundamentally sound, he is a butterfly stopper who is widely considered the best goalie in the QMJHL. Has a great performance at the WJC, taking the No. 1 job away from Brian Finley. Will be a franchise goalie. But first will spend another year in junior as there is no need to rush him." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 104)

"For a second straight year, Ouellet had a superb World Junior Championship, helping Canada to a bronze medal. He then struggled, before pulling himself together and knocking off four straight top Quebec League teams before recently breaking his thumb. "I think he needs to get better at handling the puck," [Philadelphia assistant GM Paul] Holmgren said. "We're not looking for him to get like Martin Brodeur, but he has to do a better job of getting out of the net, setting up the defensemen. Holmgren likes Ouellet's quickness, particularly getting up after going down." (Wayne Fish, The Hockey News Future Watch 2001)

"Ouellet began last season as Brian Boucher's backup before being returned to the junior ranks. He later starred for Canada at the world juniors but had a tough pivotal game as Canada lost its chance at a medal. He uses his size well and is very quick to go down from the butterfly. Has the ability to steal victories and is mature beyond his 20 years. With Cechmanek being a pleasant surprise, the Flyers have no need to rush their blue-chipper in goal." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 106)

"The Beaport, Que., native played well enough in 2000 training camp to start the season with the Flyers. But he was returned to junior, struggled with injuries and had to regroup. This season he's splitting time with Neil Little on the Phantoms, but his performances have been spotty. "He has had some real good stretches and some where his old tendencies come back into play," [Philadelphia assistant GM Paul] Holmgren. "We're working on his skating technique and improving his ability to stop the puck on wraparounds."" (Wayne Fish, The Hockey News Future Watch 2002)

"Ouellet came over in the Adam Oates deal and immediately became the goaltender of the future for the Capitals. He is a butterfly goalie who excels at covering the bottom half of the net. He enjoyed a solid first professional season but needs to work on his consistency and technique. The Capitals have no need to rush him with Olaf Kolzig holding down the fort in Washington." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p.135)

"This trade might make the Flyers sick for a decade or more. Ouellet (and three draft picks) were acquired for Adam Oates at last year's trade deadline. After two sub-par seasons in the Flyers' system, Ouellet had three consecutive shutouts at one point and seven this season in the American League. He has tremendous hockey sense, great anticipation and excellent preparation. He arrived in camp in superb shape. Goalies typically take more time than skaters to develop and Ouellet is taking care of that issue." (Dave Fay, The Hockey News Future Watch 2003, p. 35)

"Acquired from the Flyers in 2002, Ouellet appears to finally be ready for a spot on the NHL roster. His fourth AHL campaign during the lockout was marred by inconsistency, but Ouellet is mentally ready for a new challenge. If veteran Olaf Kolzig struggles this season, Ouellet could wind up seeing a lot of action." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 104)
