BIOGRAPHY

BORN: Belleville, Ontario, May 4, 1980.
HOME:
HEIGHT: 6'0"
WEIGHT: 150-174 lbs.
UNIFORM #: 1 (Boston, Providence 2002-03), 30 (Providence).
CATCHES: Left
LAST JUNIOR TEAM: Kingston Frontenacs (OHL).

CHILDHOOD FAVOURITE GOALTENDER: Patrick Roy. Raycroft's favourite team was the Montreal Canadiens, according to an interview with John Buccigross. "I grew up in Ontario and everyone liked Toronto, so I wanted to go against the grain."

STYLE:
STRENGTHS: Outstanding reflexes, a quick glove and excellent footspeed allow him to make the first save effectively.
WEAKNESSES: Must improve his consistency.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"A fairly small and young goalie, Raycroft is still years from the NHL. His biggest liability is his lack of size. He doesn't cover a lot of the net and that at times hurts him. He needs to bulk up and let his game develop before stepping up to the next level." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 74)

"He has improved his standing with a fine year in Kingston (Ontario League) after two difficult seasons in Sudbury. The Bruins think he has all the tools and though some worry about his size (6 feet, 150 pounds), he has proved durable at the junior level. With Grahame and Dafoe expected to play next year in Boston, there's room for Raycroft at Providence if he and Boston agree on a contract." (Mike Loftus, The Hockey News Future Watch 2000)

"Although they've had little success drafting goalies, the Bruins are excited about Raycroft. After opening eyes with a dismal team in Sudbury, the youngster blossomed in Kingston, earning the CHL's top goaltender honors. Boston's brass like his mental toughness. Raycroft relies on quick reflexes and has added some much-needed size in the past year. The Bruins' goalie of the future is destined for some seasoning in Providence." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 63)

"It's been an eventful first pro season for last year's major junior goalie of the year. Injuries in Boston had him playing in the NHL by the season's first weekend. Then, soon after getting shipped down to Providence, he was lost in a four-goalie shuffle. The lack of consistent playing time plus the increased level of competition, has not resulted in a spectacular year. "For a 20-year-old in his first pro season, we think he's doing fine," [Boston assistant GM Jeff] Gorton said." (Mike Loftus, The Hockey News Future Watch 2001)

"In his first season as a pro, Raycroft appeared in 15 games with the Bruins due to numerous goaltending injuries. He's been dubbed the goaltender of the future within the Boston organization and could contend for a roster spot very soon. He posted respectable numbers and actually put up worse numbers when he was demoted. Raycroft proved that he could make the transition to pro after a sparkling final year of junior hockey." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 65)

"The Bruins are thrilled with how he has rebounded from last year, when the rookie pro started as an emergency No. 1 goalie in Boston and ended by watching AHL playoff games from the stands after getting into just 26 regular season games at Providence. "He's winning games, playing with confidence," [Boston assistant GM Jeff] Gorton said of Raycroft, who has noticably improved his puck-handling skills." (Mike Loftus, The Hockey News Future Watch 2002)

"Raycroft had a solid second season of pro hockey after a wild start that saw him play as a top-two goaltneder with the Bruins due to injuries. Has arguably established himself as Boston's goaltender of the future. Raycroft may become a full-time NHLer very soon." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 63)

"Thrown into the NHL fires in 2000-2001 because of injuries, Raycroft has recovered from that potentially confidence-sapping rookie year to become one of the AHL's most consistent goalies. With Boston's goaltending in a state of flux (John Grahame traded, Jeff Hackett obtained, but not signed past this season, and Steve Shields not viewed as No. 1 material), Raycroft's shot at full-time duty in Boston may be rapidly approaching." (Mike Loftus, The Hockey News Future Watch 2003)

"The fourth-year pro could be counted on to carry a big share of the workload between the pipes and looks ready for the challenge...the Bruins considered Raycroft the best goaltending prospect in the AHL, a kid with the potential to leap into stardom in the manner of the Stars' Marty Turco or the Ducks' Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Raycroft has played in only 21 NHL games, but has performed with a calm demeanor and sound butterfly style." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 2003-04, p. 27)

"The 2004 Calder trophy winner was a revelation to most as an NHL rookie, but not to Bruins scouts. They were drawn by his ability to read the play and position himself for easy saves. Raycroft figures to enjoy a lengthy run as Boston's starter - provided he can hold off Finnish prospect Hannu Toivonen." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 104)
