ALL-STAR TEAM BALLOTING (1983-84 to PRESENT):
INJURIES:
- Took shot over left ear in warmups, November 7, 1984. Riggin became dizzy when he skated out for
the start of the game, and left for observation at a nearby hospital. Al Jensen
was the emergency starter for the Capitals.
MILESTONES:

DID YOU KNOW?
- Pat's father, Dennis Riggin, was the Western Hockey League Edmonton Flyers' goaltender for the late 1950's and early 1960's, earning two cups of coffee with the NHL Detroit Red Wings.
- According to a Washington Capitals' source, Riggin was involved in a "very nasty" January 1985 practice fight with star
forward Mike Gartner. "Riggin slashed Gartner hard on the leg, Gartner swung his stick at Riggin's head - fortunately,
he missed hitting the goalie on the neck by inches - and they slugged it out. The source said "It was hot
and heavy, a serious scrap, for about 90 seconds." Apparently, the main reason for the battle was
Gartner's habit of delivering high shots in shooting drills, something no goalie in the world accepts without
a beef. Gartner owns one of the NHL's hardest shots and Riggin had suggested strongly that the splendid winger
lower his sights." (Frank Orr, Toronto Star, January 22, 1985)
- Why did the Washington Capitals trade Riggin when he was at the top of his game? According to Jim
Proudfoot's article in the Toronto Star (January 30, 1986): "Riggin went over to Prague last spring and joined
Team Canada at the world championships. His first full game was a 3-2 conquest of the U.S., and he tended goal
extraordinarily. Afterwards, he expressed keen satisfaction at having done so. 'I was looking forward to this
game. I was really motivated,' he said. 'I'm sick and tired of all those Americans coming into the NHL and
taking our jobs.' Warming to the subject, Riggin went on to make a whole series of uncomplimentary observations
about U.S. players, their personalities and their outlook on professional competition. None of this was apt to
enhance team spirit back home in the District of Columbia, where some of the Capitals' most important athletes -
Rod Langway, Dave Christian and Bobby Carpenter, for example - are American. This was especially true because Riggin
understood his remarks would surface in the Washington papers. In other words, it seemed he was transmitting a
hostile message to his colleagues."
