WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Those of us who cheer the underdog issued a long, loud ovation for goalie Jim
Rutherford when the final second ticked off at the Olympia last April 8. Jim
Rutherford had collected his first shutout of the season - even if it was in
the final game - by blanking Montreal 1-0 to deprive the Canadiens of the
overall points title. It was a personal triumph for Rutherford, who had been
unjustly snubbed after the arrival of Rogie Vachon
and the ensuing court problems which made the signing of the free agent
netminder more trouble than it was worth...And when the Kings turned down
the [compensation package for Vachon involving Rutherford], Rutherford ended
up staying with the Red Wings, who - at least implicitly - had said they
considered him expendable. So he sat on the bench and watched Vachon struggle
through most of the first half (at one point watching Vachon start 11
consecutive games) before it became clear that Rutherford had just an important
a place with the team as did his high-priced counterpart. By season's end,
it was Vachon who was watching. Rutherford played 13 consecutive games and 17
of the last 19 in Detroit's nightmare season. Late in the year, Vachon's name
was on the waiver wire, and in April, in that last game against the Canadiens,
Rutherford unquestionably earned his right to thumb his nose at management and
say "Take that!". Of course, he didn't, because Jim Rutherford has as much
class as he has ability. He suffered the slights (in silence, for the most
part) while remaining secure and confident that when he was called upon, he
would be ready." (The Hockey News [1979-]1980 Yearbook, p. 106)
