WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Finished last year in Rimouski, started 1999-2000 in Drummondville, then
was dealt to Hull." (The Hockey News Future Watch 2000)
"Had nervous beginning as a rookie pro after development flattened out in
fourth junior year." (Jim Benton, The Hockey News Future Watch 2001)
"Had a solid rookie season in the AHL. Needs to continue to become more
consistent and work on his mental game. Could be a future backup for
Aebischer if Roy retires
in the next few years." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 178)
"He plays with high energy and makes solid second efforts for loose pucks."
(Jim Benton, The Hockey News Future Watch 2002)
"Sauve had another strong year in Hershey but his role in the organization
is in doubt with Roy and Aebischer
holding down the fort in Colorado, and Budaj hanging around
as a top prospect. He could be an NHL backup but it might not happen with
Colorado." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 172)
"The son of former NHL backstop Bob Sauve is
proving to be a chip off the old block. Sauve is in the middle of an
outstanding season with the Hershey Bears and was chosen to play in the AHL
All-Star Game. Bears' coach Mike Foligno says he has been the team's best
player. When Patrick Roy retires, Sauve should
get his chance to stick for good with the Avalanche. That could come as soon
as next season." (Adrian Dater, The Hockey News Future Watch 2003, p.
24)
"The Flames hope they struck gold by acquiring Sauve in similar fashion as the
2003 acquisition of Miikka Kiprusoff. However,
Sauve struggled as an NHL rookie in 2003-04 and was considered expendable in
Colorado because of the emergence of Peter Budaj.
Sauve should be plenty motivated to prove the Avalanche wrong." (The Sports
Forecaster 2005-06, p. 104)

INJURIES:
FIRSTS:
- Phil made his National Hockey League debut on October 18, 2003, at Edmonton's
Skyreach Center as his Avalanche faced off against the Oilers. In a penalty-filled
contest, Sauve made nineteen saves as Colorado lost, 6-3 (with the final goal being
scored into an empty net).
- On November 6, 2003, Phil earned his first National Hockey League victory.
After relieving #1 goaltender David Aebischer two
two nights earlier, Phil was given the start against Phoenix by Colorado coach Tony
Granato. Phil stopped twenty-seven of twenty-eight Coyotes shots as the Avalanche
won, 2-1. "It feels real good," Sauve said. "After those first two starts, it was a real weight lifted off my shoulders."
