WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Shields was acquired by San Jose prior to the 1998 expansion draft and performed exceptionally well. After 37 appearances, Shields even outperformed Vernon, but was once again a spectator come playoff time. Shields is at the age when most goaltenders begin to shine. At 6-3, 210 pounds, Shields covers a lot of net physically and intimidates the opposition with it. Shields is on the verge of becoming a solid No. 1 backstop. If not in 1999-2000, then surely by the following season." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 216)

"A big goalie, Shields covers a great part of the net and intimidates shooters. Formerly Dominik Hasek's backup in Buffalo, he learned by watching the best in the biz and steppe din with relative ease when traded to San Jose. Finally a No. 1 goalie in the NHL, he played in 68 games [sic] last season. Shields enjoyed an 11-game unbeaten streak in March [?], which prompted the Sharks to trade Mike Vernon to Florida. Shields has never looked back. He has the ability to get white-hot, which he has done on more than one occasion in the past." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 213)

"Shields unfortunately went under the knife to repair a bad shoulder shortly after his acquisition from San Jose in the Teemu Selanne trade last March. Prior to that, he had lost the starting goaltending job to Calder Trophy winner Evgeni Nabokov. The hero of San Jose's surprising first-round upset of top-seeded St. Louis two seasons ago, Shields has been inconsistent throughout his career. He has displayed flashes of brilliance but remains largely a backup. Shields' progression would make the Ducks look better vis-a-vis the Selanne trade. However, he'll have to outperform the promising Jean-Sebastien Giguere." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 199)

"No matter how well Shields plays, there always seems to be a younger, cheaper or simply better goaltending alternative ahead of him. In Anaheim, Jean-Sebastien Giguere stood between him and a starting gig. To his credit, Shields has always been a very good team player. Moreover, he put up decent numbers for the also-ran Ducks in 2001-02. Unfortunately, he finished the season 11 games under .500. Shields has earned a good shot at earning No. 1 goalie duties in Beantown. Yet, as a second-stringer, he's among the very best in the business." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 63)

"The former NCAA star has evolved into a dependable backup goalie. While he's flirted with starting gigs over his career, due to various circumstances, Shields has never demonstrated the consistency to be the No. 1 guy. He's a big netminder who can deliver 15-20 solid starts per year - no more, no less." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 104)
