Gary is the son of former NHL forward Des Smith, and the brother of former NHL left wing Brian Smith.
Along with Al Smith, Gary is a member of the most recent NHL goaltending tandem to share the same last name, with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1965-67.
Gary played for seven seperate National Hockey League franchises in his career.
Gary was the goaltender in net when the Winnipeg Jets franchise made their National Hockey League debut, October 10, 1979. Four days later, Gary was in net for the Jets' first NHL win (over Colorado, 4-2).
