Mike made his National Hockey League debut, earned his first National Hockey League victory, and picked up his first National Hockey League shutout all on the same evening, at Glendale Arena on October 21, 2006, as the Dallas Stars visited the Phoenix Coyotes. Smith stopped twenty-two shots for the Stars, who moved to 7-1-0 on the young season.

On October 26, 2003, while with the East Coast League's Lexington Men O'War, Mike not only shut out the visiting Dayton Bombers by a 2-0 count (making twenty-one saves), he scored the final goal of the game into the vacated Dayton net. Not only that, it was Mike's first professional victory!
