STYLE:
STRENGTHS: According to teammate Michael Peca, Snow is the best trash-talker in the league. "He's got such a wit and sense of humor like no other. [Snow] says things that will cut you without being rude or obnoxious." (The Hockey News, August 30, 2002)
WEAKNESSES:

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"If Fiset faltered last year, Garth Snow impressed. After leading Maine to the NCAA championship in 1992-93, Snow passed a tryout with the Nordiques with flying colors before playing onthe U.S. Olympic team. After the Olympics, he played extremely well for Quebec's Cornwall affiliate in the AHL, leading the team's drive to the playoff semifinals. If Fiset doesn't pick up his game, the No. 1 job could go to Snow." (The Sporting News 1994-95 Hockey Yearbook, p. 62)

"In his first full season as a professional player, Snow was upset when the Nordiques dispatched him to the Cornwall Aces of the American League during training camp. Snow has impressed the organization with his competitiveness. Snow got into five NHL games last season after playing for the U.S. Olympic team. He finished last season in Cornwall and led the Aces to the best playoff showing of any affiliate in Nordiques' history. The team likes his character and the fact that he won't accept a poor effort from his teammates. Snow will be the cause of a dilemma when the lockout ends because the Nordiques already have two young goalies in Stephane Fiset and Jocelyn Thibault." (Kevin Johnston, The Hockey News Future Watch 1995)

"Garth Snow proved to be an adequate backup, but there is doubt whether he can fill in adequately for an extended period of time should Hextall need help." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 1996-97, p. 71)

"The main reason Hextall should keep playing like a younger man." (ESPN Hockey 96, p. 69)

"The Flyers' platoon system of Ron Hextall and Garth Snow worked until the final, then it failed miserably." (The Hockey News 1997-98 Yearbook, p. 147)

"Goaltending may not have cost the Flyers the Stanley Cup, but it certainly didn't do the team any favors. While Snow and Hextall worked relatively well until the last series, neither proved he is the man to put the Flyers over the top. One must take charge or it may be time to make a change." (The Hockey News 1997-98 Yearbook, p. 147)

"Snow says he's willing to wait for Hextall to pass him the torch, but [GM Bobby] Clarke may give the torch to someone else." (The Hockey News 1997-98 Yearbook, p. 147)

"Why this team [the Flyers] is entering the season with Ron Hextall and Garth Snow in goal is a mystery." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 132)

"The problem has been around for a while and neither Hextall nor Snow is the answer. They're both big, both aggressive and both let in inexcusably soft goals in the final. The Flyers won't get into full flight until they lose these turkeys." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 133)

"He's still improving, but may have worn out his welcome in Philly. He'll never be a top NHL starter. Snow somehow put together a 12-game unbeaten streak last season. His numbers were pretty good, although the .903 save percentage was below league average. If you can't be the No. 1 goalie for the Flyers your odds aren't great of starting anywhere else. The Garth from "Wayne's World" played street hockey better than the Flyers' Garth played against the Red Wings. Look for a Snow-free winter in Philadelphia." (The Sports Forecaster Hockey '97-'98, p. 136)

"Snow is a solid backup NHL goaltender, but has been miscast as a starter for years. At 6-3, 200 pounds, he is also one of the league's bigger netminders. Though he showed he could play many consecutive games, Snow is far too inconsistent in his positioning and lateral movement to remain a No. 1 goalie. Snow will return to a more favorable backup role at age 30. He should be able to perform on a more consistent level with fewer starts." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 189)

"It makes you wonder what Snow must do to get a No. 1 job somewhere. A goaltender that hasn't recorded a goals against average over 3.00 since the '94-'95 season, when he played in just two games, Snow has to keep proving his worth every time out. A big-sized netminder, Snow plays his best hockey when his concentration level is high." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 216)

"At this stage of his career, Snow is not healthy enough to become anybody's starting goalkeeper. The nine-year pro made an early-season impression with the Pittsburgh Penguins last year before a serious groin injury sidelined him the rest of the way. Snow has always had impressive physical ability but questionable mental focus. When healthy, however, he's still a decent backup option. Until further notice, Snow should split duties 40-60 with young Rick DiPietro. He'll be a great sidekick for his younger teammate as both goalkeepers hail from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 96)

"While he still prefers to be a starting goalkeeper, the 33-year-old was a solid backup for Chris Osgood last season. Snow won 10 of his 25 appearances and was also invaluable in the Isles dressing room. A good puckhandler, he does get into trouble when he wanders out of his crease needlessly. However, he has matured and keeps his mistakes to a minimum. While the Islanders have big plans for Rick DiPietro, Snow should maintain his backup role for one more season." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 94)

"Eyebrows were raised when the Islanders re-signed the 36-year-old Snow to a three-year contract in the off-season. However, management loves the rapport Snow has with No. 1 guy Rick DiPietro. Therefore, the tandem will stick around for the next little while. If anything happens to DiPietro, Snow can take over in spurts." (The Sports Forecaster 2005-06, p. 104)
