HIS MASK: "I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan, I wnated to have 'Eddie', their mascot, on my mask. I had a mask with him on it when I played in Germany, and I liked it. With this mask, I just told the artist I wanted Eddie from Maiden, and he went out and bought a poster of him and did a great job. I still listen to Maiden - they rock." (ESPN The Magazine, 1/21/02, p. 104)
Name pronounced ROH-mahn TOOR-ihk.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"Czech superstar is [Dallas'] netminder of the future...which begins very soon." (ESPN Hockey 96, p. 103)

"At 29, Turek should be entering his prime as a goaltender. The lanky Czech has adapted well to North America after only three seasons. Blessed with a huge frame at 6-3, 190 pounds, Turek covers a lot of net. A right-handed glove man, Turek also gives the shooters a different look, which is to his advantage. Turek was a much sought-after commodity during the expansion draft, which culminated in his first legitimate shot at a No. 1 job. He should become a household name before long, and could see lots of playing time as Fuhr's backup." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 169)

"Turek's first year as a No. 1 goaltender could not have played out better, at least in the regular season. Turek won the Jennings Trophy for fewest goals against, finishing second in wins and goals-against average and leading the league in shutouts. However, Turek may have played too many minutes as he struggled in the playoffs. The Czech netminder has nevertheless entered the goaltending elite of the NHL. The Blues should try reducing Turek's workload this coming season so he can still be stopping pucks in late May." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 161)

"The veteran Czech netminder hopes a trade to Calgary will help exorcise his playoff demons. Turek was a formidable regular-season goaltender in his two seasons as the St. Louis Blues' No. 1 man between the pipes. Unfortunately, he failed to lead them further than the second round [sic]. With the Flames, he'll be asked to provide leadership and solidify what had become a revolving door in goal. The 30-year-old will likely see action in 55-60 games with the Flames. In Calgary, he may stop thinking about his playoff failures - since getting there will be a formidable challenge in itself." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 173)

"Last season, Turek gave the Flames their best goaltending presence since Mike Vernon originally departed for Detroit in the early '90s. He enjoyed an outstanding start and was among the best players in the NHL in the early going. He faded in the second half, which is understandable given that he saw an awful lot of rubber in his first season in Southern Alberta. Nicknamed "Large", the Czech goaltender moves well for a big man, although he does count on his stand-up frame and sound positioning to stop the puck consistently. The Flames will give Turek more rest this season in the hopes that he'll be ready for the stretch drive." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 167)
