- Derek was named an assistant coach with the ECHL Charlotte Checkers to begin the 2002-03 campaign. With thirty games remaining in the 2003-04 season, Derek was elevated to head coach of the Checkers. Through 2004-05, he holds a 51-40-11 record with the club.
