WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"The Devils know they might lose backup goalie Mike Dunham in the expansion draft, but it won't be Damphousse who takes his spot if that happens. Just 18, he is four or five years away from playing in the NHL. Damphousse improved considerably in the past year, but he must get stronger to have a chance at the next level. At 6 feet and 165 pounds, he is similar to Chris Terreri in that he needs to overcome a lack of size with physical strength. To do that, the Devils have helped him bulk up and plan to watch his development in the AHL. Damphousse has great natural ability, but he has to improve his quickness while becoming more patient. That's a difficult combination that separates decent goalies from great ones." (The Hockey News Future Watch 1998)

"When he was first drafted, it was feared Damphousse might be too small and too thin. But he is maturing physically by adding size and strength to his upper body without losing any quickness. Although he is progressing, the team feels it may take some time before he is ready. [New Jersey director of player personnel David] Conte believes the team has another winning French-Canadian goalie: "Some people say so many good goalies come out of that league because it's a wide-open, scoring league," Conte said. "But it must be a passion for Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur. It's also the culture. The goalie has an important place."" (The Hockey News Future Watch 1999)

"On pace to back-up Martin Brodeur in a few years, Damphousse plays a very mature game. He doesn't get rattled after letting in a bad goal and exhibits tremendous poise during crunch time. He plays his angles well and is very agile. Damphousse is thin, but has been bulking up. The Devils like him and won't hinder his progress by rushing him." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 100)

"Rebounded to have a solid season after a sub-par one in '98-99. Has bulked up and increased his body strength. A very agile and athletic goaltender who is positionally sound. It appears Damphousse's stock is back on the rise." (The Sports Forecaster 2000-01, p. 89)

"With John Vanbiesbrouck and Chris Terreri both gone, the backup goaltender role is up for grabs in New Jersey. Damphousse has the inside track after a strong campaign on an uncharacteristically weak Albany River Rats team. His goals-against average of 2.86 and .914 save percentage would place the 22-year-old high on any team's prospect list. Damphousse's improved play should get a lot of advanced notice by the Devils before training camp but he will have to earn his roster spot with a solid preseason performance." (The Sports Forecaster 2001-02, p. 91)

"Damphousse played the yo-yo between Albany and New Jersey in 2001-02 and lost his NHL job to veteran John Vanbiesbrouck. He may finally stick now, as Jean-Sebastien Giguere's backup. He has logged a lot of time in the minors." (The Sports Forecaster 2002-03, p. 193)
